A Pike Road Schools student died of the flu Tuesday night, the school system superintendent confirmed Thursday.

Third-grade Pike Road Elementary student Zainab Momin stayed home from school Tuesday with flu symptoms, said Pike Road Schools Superintendent Chuck Ledbetter, who has been in contact with the girl’s parents.

Recounting details shared by Momin’s parents, Ledbetter said Momin’s fever continued to surge Tuesday night until she was taken to the hospital where she would later die.

Pike Road Schools closed Thursday because of inclement weather, but Ledbetter said the school is preparing to help Momin’s family and the school cope with the unexpected loss.

“It’s almost a loss for words any time a child passes away,” Ledbetter said. “Every child in the system is special. Any time it happens it’s an awful, awful thing, and in this case with a sweet young child, there’s no way to expect it to happen. It’s heartbreaking and difficult.”
